What's the Difference Between Dating, Exclusivity, and a Relationship?

The labels aren't as confusing as they seem. Here's what each stage actually means and how relationships naturally progress.

Modern dating has created more labels than ever before.

You're dating. Then you're talking. Then maybe you're in a situationship. Then you're exclusive. Then you're officially in a relationship.

Depending on who you ask, each of those terms means something slightly different, which is exactly why so many people end up confused about where they actually stand.

The truth is that every relationship develops differently, so there isn't a perfect timeline for moving from one stage to the next. But I do think each stage has a different purpose, and understanding those differences makes modern dating feel a lot less complicated.

Dating Is About Discovery

Dating is exactly what it sounds like: getting to know someone.

You're learning who they are, figuring out whether your personalities fit together, and deciding whether this is someone you'd genuinely like to keep seeing. At this stage, there usually isn't an expectation of commitment.

Some people date one person at a time, while others go on dates with multiple people before deciding who they connect with most.

I don't think either approach is inherently right or wrong. What matters is honesty. The goal of dating isn't to decide whether you've found your future partner after one dinner. It's to discover whether the relationship deserves another date, another conversation, and eventually the opportunity to become something more.

Exclusivity Is About Intention

At some point, dating starts to feel different.

You stop checking the dating apps as often. Someone else asks you out, and instead of feeling excited, your first thought is that you'd rather spend time with the person you're already seeing. That's usually the moment exclusivity starts making sense.

Exclusivity simply means two people have decided to stop dating other people and focus on building one relationship together.

It isn't a promise that you'll be together forever, and it doesn't automatically mean you're boyfriend and girlfriend. It's simply the decision to give one relationship your full attention instead of dividing it between several possibilities.

One of the biggest ideas from What Does Exclusivity Mean in Dating? is that exclusivity isn't something you assume because you've been seeing each other for a while. It's something you talk about because both people deserve to know they're building the same relationship.

A Relationship Is About Commitment

The next step is commitment.

By this point, you've already gotten to know each other. You've probably become exclusive, you've built trust, and you've decided you want to keep moving forward together. Asking someone to be your boyfriend or girlfriend doesn't create the relationship overnight. It simply gives a name to something that's already been growing.

One of my favorite moments from the podcast was when I said:

"To be officially dating, to be boyfriend and girlfriend, you do have to ask."

I still believe that. It doesn't have to be an elaborate moment or a perfectly planned evening, but I do think relationships deserve that conversation. There's something meaningful about intentionally choosing each other instead of simply assuming you're on the same page.

Why These Stages Get Confused

The reason so many people struggle to define these stages is because real relationships rarely move in perfectly straight lines.

You might feel like you're already in a relationship before you've talked about it. You might become exclusive long before anyone uses the words "boyfriend" or "girlfriend." Or you might spend months dating without ever discussing where the relationship is headed.

That's how people end up in situationships.

One person believes the relationship is becoming serious while the other still thinks you're casually getting to know each other. Neither person is necessarily wrong. They're simply operating with different expectations because they've never compared them.

As I said in the episode:

"One person thinks it's casual. One person thinks it's serious. One person is seeing lots of other people at the same time. One person is seeing nobody else."

That's exactly why communication matters. It replaces assumptions with clarity.

What Actually Matters

I honestly think we spend too much time debating the labels.

Dating.

Exclusivity.

Relationship.

Those words are helpful because they give us a common language, but they aren't what make a relationship healthy.

Research from the Gottman Institute has consistently shown that healthy relationships are built on trust, communication, and shared expectations.

Research from the Pew Research Center also suggests that as modern dating has evolved, conversations about expectations have become more important than ever because assumptions simply aren't enough anymore.

At the end of the day, every healthy relationship follows the same general path. You meet someone, you get to know them, you decide whether you want to focus on each other, and eventually you choose whether you want to commit.

The exact timing will be different for every couple, but the conversations along the way are what move the relationship forward.

FAQs

What's the difference between dating and exclusivity?

Dating is the stage where you're getting to know someone and may still be open to meeting other people. Exclusivity means you've both agreed to stop dating others and focus on your connection.

Is exclusivity the same as a relationship?

Not necessarily. Many couples become exclusive before officially defining themselves as boyfriend and girlfriend or entering a committed relationship.

Can you be exclusive without being boyfriend and girlfriend?

Yes. Exclusivity can be a stage where you're focusing only on each other while continuing to decide whether you want an official relationship.

When should dating become exclusive?

There's no universal timeline. It usually makes sense when both people are more interested in building their connection than continuing to date other people.

What's the difference between a situationship and a relationship?

A situationship is usually undefined, while a relationship has been clearly discussed and agreed upon. The biggest difference is clarity and mutual commitment.
