Halloween costumes always sound like a great idea until you actually have to pick one.
Suddenly, you're scrolling through dozens of costume ideas, trying to find something that's funny, recognizable, and doesn't require you to spend $150 on an outfit you're probably never going to wear again.
And if you're going out with friends, there's always that one person who has had their costume planned for two months while everybody else is trying to figure something out the week before Halloween.
I think a lot of guys make choosing a Halloween costume more complicated than it needs to be.
You don't need an elaborate outfit, an expensive costume, or something that takes weeks to put together. In fact, some of the best Halloween costumes are the ones you can make using clothes you already own.
The way I look at it, a good Halloween costume should accomplish three things: People should recognize what you are, it should be relatively easy to put together, and you should actually be comfortable wearing it.
Once you start thinking about costumes that way, finding something to wear becomes a lot easier.
Pick Something People Will Actually Recognize
I think the easiest way to choose a Halloween costume is to start with something recognizable.
Maybe it's a character from a movie you love, somebody from a popular television show, a famous athlete, or a celebrity with a distinctive look.
The advantage of choosing something recognizable is that you don't need to spend the entire night explaining your costume.
And honestly, pop culture costumes are usually some of the most fun because they give people something to talk about.
You might dress as a character from a show everybody's watching, recreate an outfit from a movie, or reference a moment that went viral earlier in the year.
The National Retail Federation's Halloween Consumer Trends tracks how people celebrate Halloween, including popular costume categories and spending habits.
My advice is to pick something that's recognizable to the people you're actually going to be around.
If you're going to a party with friends who love movies, a movie character might be perfect. If you're going somewhere with a lot of sports fans, dressing as a recognizable athlete could be an easy choice.
You don't necessarily need everybody in the world to understand your costume. But it helps when the people you're spending the night with get the reference.
The Best Easy Halloween Costumes for Guys
If you don't want to spend a lot of time or money putting together a costume, there are plenty of options that work with everyday clothes.
Here are some of my favorites.
Cowboy: Jeans, boots, a button-down shirt, and a cowboy hat. It's simple, recognizable, and you can wear almost everything again.
Athlete: A jersey, shorts or athletic pants, and sneakers. If you want to make it more specific, recreate the look of a particular player.
Maverick from Top Gun: Jeans, a white T-shirt, aviator sunglasses, and a bomber jacket. Add a few patches if you want the costume to be more recognizable.
Carmy from The Bear: A white T-shirt, blue apron, dark pants, and sneakers. This works especially well if you want something understated.
Ken from Barbie: Depending on which version you choose, you can put together a recognizable outfit with denim, sunglasses, or a bright shirt.
Men in Black: A black suit, white shirt, black tie, and sunglasses. This is also a great option if you're coordinating with a friend.
Construction Worker: Work boots, jeans, a high-visibility vest, and a hard hat. It's inexpensive and doesn't require much preparation.
Clark Kent: A suit or button-down shirt with a Superman shirt underneath. It's a simple costume that doesn't require wearing an actual superhero suit.
I think the key is choosing something that feels like an outfit rather than a costume you're going to regret wearing after twenty minutes.
You can also look through your closet before buying anything. Sometimes you already own most of what you need and just have to pick up one or two accessories.
Group Halloween Costumes Are Usually Worth It
If you're going to a Halloween party or out to bars with friends, I think group costumes can be some of the most fun.
Instead of everybody showing up as completely unrelated characters, you choose something you can all participate in.
And the nice thing is that group costumes don't necessarily require everybody to wear the same thing.
You could all dress as characters from the same movie or television show, players from the same sports team, or celebrities from a particular era.
Some easy group costume ideas include the Top Gun pilots, characters from The Hangover, the Men in Black, different versions of Spider-Man, or a group of professional athletes.
You can also choose something completely ridiculous if that's more your group's personality.
I think the best group costumes are the ones where everybody actually wants to participate. If one person is doing all the planning and everybody else is being forced into something, it usually becomes more stressful than fun.
And if you're hoping to meet people while you're out, a recognizable group costume can be a natural conversation starter.
In What Is a Good Conversation Starter at a Bar?, I talk about how starting conversations doesn't need to be nearly as complicated as people make it.
Sometimes something as simple as a funny costume gives people an easy reason to come over and say hello.
Don't Sacrifice Comfort for a Costume
Here's something I think people forget when choosing a Halloween costume: You're probably going to be wearing it for several hours.
Maybe you're going to dinner, heading to a party, walking between bars, or spending most of the night standing around with friends.
If your costume is uncomfortable after thirty minutes, you're probably going to spend the rest of the night wishing you'd chosen something else.
That's why I generally prefer costumes built around regular clothes.
Jeans, sneakers, jackets, and button-down shirts are usually easier to wear than something with a giant mask, complicated accessories, or an outfit that makes it difficult to move around.
And depending on where you live, you should probably think about the weather, too.
A costume that looks great indoors might be miserable if you're walking around outside in freezing temperatures.
If you're going to be out all night, make sure you can comfortably walk, sit down, and move around. If your costume involves a mask, make sure it doesn't interfere with your vision.
The National Safety Council's Halloween Safety Tips emphasizes visibility, safe movement, and avoiding costume-related hazards.
You want to enjoy Halloween, not spend the entire night adjusting your outfit.
You Don't Need to Spend a Lot of Money
One of the biggest mistakes guys make is assuming they need to buy an entirely new costume.
You really don't.
Before you spend money, look at what you already own. You might have the jeans, jacket, shoes, or shirt needed for a recognizable character.
Then figure out whether there's one accessory that completes the look.
Maybe it's a cowboy hat, a pair of sunglasses, an apron, or a jersey.
Those smaller details can make a simple outfit feel like an actual costume without requiring you to buy something you're never going to use again.
And if you're already planning to spend money going out for Halloween, I think it's worth being realistic about your budget.
In How Do You Know If You Should Take a Risk in Your 20s?, I explore how to enjoy nights out without spending more than you intended.
Between the costume, transportation, drinks, and whatever else you have planned, Halloween can become expensive pretty quickly.
There's no reason to make the costume the most expensive part of the night unless you genuinely want to.
Don't Wait Until the Last Minute
I know plenty of guys who don't start thinking about Halloween until somebody asks what they're wearing a few days before.
And while you can absolutely put together a good last-minute costume, giving yourself a little more time makes the process easier.
I'd recommend figuring out what you're doing about a week or two before Halloween.
That gives you time to coordinate with friends, check what you already own, and order anything you might need.
It also means you won't be scrambling to find the one accessory that makes your costume recognizable.
If you're still undecided, Google's Frightgeist is a useful place to explore Halloween costume searches and trends.
But I wouldn't spend hours trying to find the most original costume anybody has ever worn.
Sometimes the best option is something simple that you know you'll enjoy wearing.
And Here's The Thing
I think a lot of guys overthink Halloween costumes because they want to find something that's funny, creative, recognizable, and different from what everybody else is wearing.
But the truth is that your costume doesn't need to accomplish every one of those things.
You can wear something simple and still have a great costume. You can dress as a character people have seen before and still make it your own.
And you definitely don't need to spend a ridiculous amount of money to look good.
My advice is to choose something you actually like, make sure people can recognize it, and put together an outfit you're comfortable wearing for the entire night.
Because once you're out with your friends, nobody's going to care whether you spent three weeks planning your costume or threw it together the day before.
They're going to remember whether you had a good time.
Pick something recognizable, keep it simple, and stop overthinking it. Halloween is supposed to be fun.
