Off Campus
There are certain purchases that feel impossible to justify the first time you make them.
A nice watch.
A quality leather jacket.
A bottle of cologne that costs significantly more than anything you've ever owned.
When you're standing in the store looking at the price tag, it's easy to wonder how something so small could possibly be worth that much money. After all, it's just a fragrance. How different could it really be from something that costs a fraction of the price?
That's exactly how I used to think.
For years, I bought whatever was inexpensive enough that I didn't have to think about it. Cologne felt like one of those things that was nice to have but never important enough to spend real money on. I assumed expensive fragrances were mostly about branding and luxury, not something that would actually make a noticeable difference.
Eventually, I decided to try one anyway.
Looking back, I don't think the biggest difference was the scent itself.
It was everything that came with it.
During this week's podcast, I realized that cologne ended up on my list for the same reason as almost everything else I talked about. It wasn't because it was expensive. It was because it quietly improved the way I felt every time I used it.
"When you clean up or when you feel good about the way you look, it kind of affects everything in your life. It really does. And it affects it more than you would probably think too."
I think that's exactly why a good cologne can be worth the money.
You're Not Really Buying a Fragrance
When people talk about expensive cologne, they usually focus on the scent.
Which notes does it have?
How long does it last?
Which brand makes the best one?
Those are fair questions, but I don't think they're the most important ones.
The real value isn't in smelling different.
It's in feeling more put together.
I've noticed that on the mornings when I take an extra few minutes to get ready, whether that's putting on clothes I feel good in, styling my hair, or spraying on a fragrance I genuinely like, I leave the house differently. I don't suddenly become a different person, but I carry myself with a little more confidence because I feel prepared.
That's one of the reasons I've written about How to Dress for a First Date. Confidence usually isn't created during the date itself. It's built beforehand, through small routines that help you stop worrying about yourself and start paying attention to the person sitting across from you.
A good cologne works the same way.
It's a finishing touch.
Not because anyone else expects it.
Because you do.
Cost Per Wear Changes the Conversation
One thing that completely changed my perspective was thinking about cologne the same way I think about clothing.
If you buy a quality jacket and wear it for five years, nobody calls it an expensive purchase anymore.
They call it something that held up well.
I think fragrance deserves the same kind of thinking.
A bottle of cologne might feel expensive on the day you buy it, but if you're wearing it several times a week, there's a good chance it'll last you years. Suddenly, that purchase isn't spread across one day. It's spread across hundreds of mornings.
That's a completely different calculation.
Style publications like GQ have long recommended building a small collection of timeless grooming essentials instead of constantly chasing trends, and I think fragrance fits into that philosophy perfectly.
The goal isn't to own ten bottles.
It's to find one that genuinely feels like you.
Once you do, you stop thinking about the price and start appreciating how often you actually use it.
Nobody Notices Good Cologne. They Notice How You Carry Yourself.
One thing I've realized is that people rarely compliment confidence directly.
Instead, they'll tell you that you seem relaxed.
That you seem put together.
That you have good style.
Sometimes they'll even say, "You smell good."
What they're usually responding to isn't the cologne itself.
It's the complete impression you're creating.
A good fragrance doesn't do the work for you.
It complements everything else.
It's the last step after you've taken care of yourself, gotten dressed, and walked out the door feeling like the best version of yourself.
That's why I don't think cologne is about trying to impress other people.
It's about creating little moments that remind you to show up intentionally.
I kept coming back to that same idea.
"A lot of these things improve your life because they improve the way you think about yourself. And they make you feel better about yourself."
For me, that's exactly what a good fragrance does.
You Don't Need the Most Expensive Bottle
One misconception I think a lot of guys have is that if they're going to buy cologne, they need the most expensive bottle on the shelf.
I don't think that's true at all.
There's a point where you're paying for exclusivity, branding, or collectible packaging more than the fragrance itself.
The goal isn't to spend the most money.
The goal is to find something you genuinely enjoy wearing.
Maybe that's a designer fragrance.
Maybe it's a niche house.
Maybe it's something that costs far less than the bottles social media tells you to buy.
I've found that wearing a fragrance you love every day is much better than owning an expensive bottle you're afraid to use.
If it makes you feel more confident every time you spray it on, you've probably found the right one.
Confidence Is Usually Built Through Small Habits
One thing I've learned over the past few years is that confidence rarely comes from one huge moment.
It's usually built through dozens of small routines.
Going to the gym consistently.
Getting enough sleep.
Keeping your apartment clean.
Taking care of your skin.
Wearing clothes that fit well.
Using a fragrance you genuinely enjoy.
None of those things will completely transform your life overnight.
Together, though, they change the way you carry yourself.
I've talked about this before in What Should Every Guy Invest In During His 20s? because I think some of the best investments aren't dramatic at all. They're simply the habits and purchases that make you feel a little more like yourself every day.
The same idea applies to The Purchases That Actually Improve Your Life. Most improvements don't come from one life-changing purchase. They come from small decisions that quietly improve your routine over time.
That's why I think a quality cologne can absolutely be worth the money.
Not because it changes who you are.
Because it becomes part of the version of yourself you're intentionally building.
And Here's The Thing
I don't think an expensive cologne is worth buying because it's expensive.
I think it's worth buying if it's something you'll actually wear.
If putting it on becomes part of your morning routine...
If it gives you a little more confidence before a first date, a job interview, or a night out with friends...
If it's something that makes you feel more put together every time you leave the house...
Then the price becomes much less important.
The best purchases aren't always the ones that save you the most money.
They're the ones that quietly improve your life every single day.
For me, a good bottle of cologne has done exactly that.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is expensive cologne actually worth the money?
It can be if you wear it regularly. A quality fragrance often lasts longer, smells more refined, and becomes part of your daily routine, making the cost easier to justify over time.
How much should a guy spend on cologne?
There's no perfect number. Buy a fragrance that fits your budget and that you'll actually enjoy wearing consistently rather than choosing the most expensive option available.
Does wearing cologne make you more attractive?
Cologne alone won't make someone more attractive, but smelling good can contribute to a positive first impression and make you feel more confident.
How long does a bottle of cologne last?
For most people, a bottle can last anywhere from several months to a few years depending on how often it's worn and how many sprays are used each time.
Should you wear cologne every day?
If you enjoy it, there's no reason not to. Many people make fragrance part of their daily grooming routine, just like brushing their teeth or styling their hair.
