Hi guys, welcome back to guys set a guy's guide to what should be talked about. I have been trying to find a way to discuss what to wear and how to dress on the podcast because that's typically a visual thing, right? Like you need to see someone else's style or how they dress to get inspiration for what to wear or to even like talk about it. It's much easier to have a visual element to it. so for the video, I think it'll be easy, but for the audio element, like I've been trying to figure out how to do that.

So I put together a few style guides and I'm going to try to talk through them and see how it goes and give you some scenarios and some recommendations for how to dress for each of those scenarios. Because this was the reason I started guys that in the first place, like when I first moved to New York for my summer internship, I didn't know what to wear going out to a bar. My roommate, Reid and I both didn't know what to wear. We were both like.

What do we do? Like what the fuck where who do we talk to? Who do we ask? Like where do we even find advice for this? I think it was more me than him. I don't think he really cares that much about what he wears But I at this end of the day like I think most guys don't think about it But actually do care a little more than they do or more care more than they say they do So I think this is like a great place to talk about it and and and I'll give my best effort to do that today But when we first moved I looked online after thinking about that question

And I was like, there's no great place to find recommendations or advice on what to wear out to a bar or what to wear on a date or what to wear to work. And I was like, why does that not exist? And that's why I originally started guys say, which was originally called the 1921 club, which was for 19 to 21 year olds, because that's how old I was at the time. And then I realized I was going to outgrow my own company by the time I was 21, which was really fucking stupid. So I changed the name to guys set, which you know that by now, if you're listening here, if you don't.

It's two words combined. It's guys and mindset and it's your mindset around all the different things that you think about. So this one is your mindset around how you dress. And I am really excited to get into this one because it's been a long time coming and it's been a long it's been what I've wanted to do for a really long time. I've just avoided it because I don't know the best way to talk about it. But I'm just going to try and see how it goes. So I guess like if you're blind to this is probably the perfect episode for you. And if you're not I'm probably just a piece of shit for saying that. But if

Like I'm just gonna give it my shot. I'm gonna give it my best and see what happens here But I've created a place now to find answers and recommendations for questions like that and I don't think I've addressed it well enough yet. So I'm gonna do my best to describe it to you today and talk about other brands and Places to shop and places to look for outfits, especially with Black Friday coming up I feel like this is a perfect time to do this with Black Friday and Cyber Monday Like literally everything you're gonna shop for is on sale right now

So there's no better time to do this episode than like Thanksgiving and November time. This wasn't even intentional. That just like, should, I should have just said it was, it just happened to be the perfect time for it. So this is also something that I think would be really beneficial to me. Like I would, would have loved and still would have loved love somebody to tell me like what to wear or like give me at least recommendations and advice for it. Of course, this is just my opinion. This is one guy's opinion on it. And

Everything I say here is just a suggestion and a recommendation and it is completely up to you to figure out what you want to wear and why you want to wear it and how you wear it and find your own style and figure that all out. But my assumption is that most guys don't have a style or a way they like to dress yet and or maybe you do. And if you do, that's amazing. But my assumption here is that most guys probably don't not to say everyone dresses badly and not to say I dress badly, but like

I think we could all use some more advice and some recommendations on it. I think it's just a helpful thing to talk about and to work through. So, yeah, I don't think a lot of us have sense of style or fashion, like if I'm being fully honest with you. Like, or any guy in their early 20s for that matter. I think it's something you like grow into or figure out as you start dating and start going out more and start to figure out what to wear to work and all those different things. And those are actually the three scenarios I'm going to talk through on this episode. But I...

When I was younger, I clashed until my mom told me what clashing meant. I had no fucking idea what I was doing. And having an older sister was super beneficial to me in that respect. She helped me figure out what to wear. when I was going to dances in middle school and high school, here's where to shop, here's what to do. And I don't think everybody has that relationship with a sibling or just somebody to tell them. And that is what I hope to be for you today.

if you're looking for that and even if you're not, hope you find some suggestions or something that I say that resonates with you or is helpful about it. and yeah, so I'm all that to say, like I am by no means a style expert and will never be like ever, ever, ever. I'm just learning alongside you at the same time and, and understanding what I like to wear. And I think it's cool that I'm able to share it on here. and my proof for why we need this, I'm backing my assumption up that we all have no style is I was at a friend's house for dinner.

on friday night and she was telling us about like how rough hinge has been for her she was telling the whole table about it and we were all like no it can't be like that bad like i just think you aren't aren't like scrolling i don't know like it just can't be as bad as you're saying it is like i i the way you're talking about it seems that the guys on the app are just not like are just terrible and she was like all right fine i'll prove it to you guys so

She screen shared her hinge onto her TV, which is something that I've people do on TikTok before it's which is mean on paper, but like it was funny. And for me, it was extremely educational and I'm happy to bring that to you and let you know what I saw because like I was literally taking notes as she was doing it. I was like, how the boys need some help. Like the boys need some help. And I I'm thrilled to be able to provide that help or hopefully provide that help. that's all I have to say on that. And that's actually not true. I have a lot more to say, but

We'll start, we'll start here. So honestly, like I thought that was one of the best proof points I've seen for why something like guys set needs to exist and why there needs to be a place for guys to get recommendations and advice on things from how to create a hinge profile to what to wear on a date. And I hope to keep providing that and keep doing that every single week. So this week is style.

And I have drawn up three scenarios to bring to the table today and they are three of what I think are the most common ones that we could all use some help for. So the first one is what to wear going on a date. I think dressing for a date is actually easier than we make it out to be like it doesn't have to be something that scares you or is just like what the fuck am I supposed to wear on a date? Like I don't know how am supposed to figure that out? I think it's actually easier than we than we make it out to be so.

I think you should have three pairs of pants that you can mix and match with a lot of different things. A black pair, a blue pair, maybe a khaki pair and a gray pair and jeans. That's actually five, so maybe five, but simple and easy. Like you have five pants that like can go with everything and the matching can come next. Like we can talk about how to match and how to figure that out next. But I think having five like staple pants that

can pretty much go with everything will make your life a lot easier. So black, blue, khaki, gray and jeans. And we'll talk about where to find all that in a second too. And then I think a few solid t-shirts makes everything easier too. So have a white t-shirt, a black t-shirt, a gray t-shirt and a blue. And now I think you've kind of built your basics. Like everything from there feels like it'll be easier.

I would add on top of that a jacket of your choice. think especially now we're getting into like the colder months of the year, especially where I live in New York. So add a jacket, like something light that you can wear to dinner and you won't be cold, but also something that like, if you want to take off, you can put on your chair around your chair during the date and show that awesome t-shirt you have under, some jackets that I like are a bomber jacket, a jean jacket, like a khaki kind of barber jacket. think those are all.

Good things to just have in your closet or in your wardrobe that you can throw on top of your t-shirt and jeans And will look presentable and make it look like you actually put in some effort here At the end of the day like this isn't rocket science like it can feel like when you're about to go on the date or about to get ready the when you realize you have like 15 minutes you're like Oh fuck. I have to get ready Meanwhile, she's been getting ready for like two hours and we're all just like lazy pieces of shit like slobs laying on the couch until like we literally have to get ready and we have to shower and go So this makes it all much easier and then cologne I think

You should also have in your arsenal a button down, like doesn't matter kind of what, but like maybe like a white button down a stripe button down or like a flannel shirt, something like that. That can also go over all these t-shirts or you don't even need the t-shirt at all. You could also wear a button down and then put that jacket on top of it. So those are all kind of like very basic, but like will look nice options. And I started an Instagram account today actually, so you can follow it. It's called guyset style.

But what I've been doing because I feel like a lot of the resources out there like a GQ or like some of the other websites that exist for guys now don't really give us specific style recommendations or like what normal people are wearing on the street or just in a daily life. And they just kind of show us what the celebrities wear and

It's hard to mimic what celebrities wear because we're normal people and like we don't have number one that budget but number two like that style and a lot of us can't pull off what they wear especially me like I'll say I'll speak for myself here like I can't pull off what they wear so I've been looking around as I'm like walking throughout the streets to to work and just in general when I'm walking around and I've been taking pictures of like what people are wearing in the most non creepy way possible I hope that doesn't come off creepy at all, but like I think knowing what

people wear and like being able to see that and then find items of what they wear and mimic their style. It's one of the best ways to learn what you want to wear and like what you like when you're seeing like actual people in the wild and like seeing them on the street and noticing what they're wearing and then you can buy what you like from what you saw. So what I'll do on that Instagram account and on TikTok is like break down people's outfits from the street that I like and talk about like where you can buy.

that what they wear and like alternate alternate options to what they have on as well. I hope it doesn't come off as creepy like it might and that's not the intention and I hope not. That's yeah, I'm just going to do it and see what happens. I've learned a lot from it already. I've only like done it like I've only like taking like a couple of pictures from the street so far of outfits that I've walked by that I like that other guys are wearing and it kind of correlates exactly what I'm saying already like.

It's t-shirts. It's like a flannel or like an over shirt is another another thing. I think you should have like a It's like a heavier flannel or like a plaid Kind of heavier like mix of jacket and shirt shack it shirt jacket overcoat same thing shack I like the word shack it a lot actually So all of those are just like good things to have so you have the pants you have the shirts and then you have like a button down

A flannel a shack it and like maybe one other jacket like a jean jacket or like a corduroy jacket like a maybe a carhartt jacket if you know what I'm talking about And like a bomber like any of those could work as well You don't need all of it. You can just pick a couple items from across that board and mix and match I said five I said like a bunch of different options But like realistically you could have like two or three of those and be set like you you don't need much more than that

And I think this also applies really nicely to going out with friends. Like it kind of answers my question of like, what the fuck do I wear going out? What do I wear going out to a bar? What are we going out to? Like I'm not going clubbing. was gonna say club. Like I don't fucking go clubbing. But like, what do I wear to a bar with friends? Like a dive bar, just going out on a Friday, going to someone's pregame. Like all of those things I think apply exactly the same to weekend going out and dates as well. So they all that.

Is a mixed bag mixed bucket of all that I wanted to separate them into two but like I think it's it's pretty similar and they overlap a lot So here are some of the brands that I like for all of this and I think these brands across the board like apply for The pants the shirts the jackets the shoes the belts. have a belt I think also like a a black belt and a brown belt that should kind of carry you through What like belt you need to wear for all these outfits? and then like

Match your shoes to some I mean sorry match your belt to something else. So like if you're wearing a Let me think about this I don't know. I'll think about how to know how do you match your belt? I think I think the rule is like your belt should match your shoes But if you're wearing white shoes, it doesn't I don't fucking know Let me I'll think about that and get back to you on like the matching of the belt But have a brown belt and a black belt and that should just kind of cover you across the board for all these outfits but some of the brands I like

for and I think you should shop on for Black Friday, Cyber Monday, like all these things coming up. Everything is just on sale, like starting now. Like those two days like don't carry weight anymore. It just is like sale from now till the rest of eternity, but like at least through November. So J. Crew, Levi's, Abercrombie and Fitch, Urban Outfitters, Rag and Bone, Theory, Skims, they have really great t-shirts and underwear, I really like them. Vince, Frame, Lululemon, Bonobos, Bonobos, Bonobos? I don't know, I don't know.

It's on sale. Like why would you not? I'm not like I don't push any of these. They don't pay me for any of this. I wish they did. They don't as read nicely mentioned. But that's one two three four five six. I don't know. That's like over 10 brands that I think. And I think finding where to shop is one of the hardest things like where to shop for clothes and figuring out what you want to where to even start is a lot of the time the hardest part. So I think this list should be helpful in like where to start and where to go from there. And.

Yeah, like get some of these items. I think it's a great time to do it And as I said like what to wear out on the weekend I think is pretty similar to what to wear on a date and I also think you could have like a nice pair of like white sneakers or just like Fancy or sneakers that you could wear on the date going out that just kind of like match the outfit I have vejas that I like vejas. They're they're spelled V V E J a s They are pronounced vejas. I'll think of some other shoe brands that I like vans. I think are nice

Reed, what other shoes do you like? He said, Skechers. What I'm just, I'm gonna think it's more, I'll put together like a guide and I'll put it maybe in the show notes below, but like a nice white pair of sneakers that you can just like, white shoes, not sneakers that you could wear out to all this or gray or like beige, like something that you like and can match your outfit, brown, black, all that's fine. But something that's like easy and simple and like one color that it can.

It looks a little fancier if you're out on a date. Not that they're so fancy, but it looks a little bit more presentable going out on a date. I see a lot of those Nike ones, those Nike ones with the one swoop that guys wear all the time. And then what to wear to work. And this is different for lot of people because I know a lot of us work online and some of us work in the office. I think the best way to know what to wear to work is the same thing as I said before about looking at what other people are wearing.

Just mimicking their style because like it's not a fashion show at work. We don't like put in so so much work But I think usually like a button down if your work requires a tie or a jacket Obviously you should do that a nice pair of slacks which are like fancier pants that I'm saying you should get like they're not like the khaki material they're like the Dress pants like basically like suit pants. So I think having those is always helpful Having a suit is always a good thing. But I think for the most part you probably wear like khaki pants a button down

But look around what other people are wearing. Cause I work at a startup and like, if I wore a button down to work, like it w would look like I was out of place. If everyone else is t-shirts and pants and the same like fancy or sneakers and like just do that, follow suit. But when in doubt, like you can always ask, ask an older coworker. I don't think that's ever like a harmful thing. And I think it's, they would appreciate it and just know like, like, yeah, he's, he's trying. Like he's, I would rather you try than, than not and not know what to wear and just be like stressed out about it.

So I think there's always somebody who can reach out to or ask about that like a friend a co-worker somebody like a co-worker friend same thing and just ask their advice on it and When in doubt like button down and pants and like nicer shoes. I think is always a good option So those are three scenarios I hope I hope I did that well and if I didn't that is why I've avoided it until now but I really do want to talk about and I think like this is a great place to do it and I will continue to talk about this and

maybe put together like style guides and create that account and just see where it goes from there. But I think style is one of the biggest elements that I haven't really touched on on guys set yet. And I plan to in the next months and years and continue with it just so that like we can all keep getting advice and recommendations on it. I think it's the most helpful thing for all of us in finding out like what to wear and finding our style. So I hope you liked this. I hope you liked the guide I put together.
