Holiday Gift Guide 2024: What to Buy Him & Her This Season
Originally shared on the Guyset podcast - a guy's guide to what should be talked about
Why This Gift Guide Actually Works
Let's be honest - shopping for gifts is hard enough when you're buying for yourself. Shopping for the women in your life? That's a whole different level of difficulty. That's why I spent time actually talking to women about what they want, what they've loved receiving, and what their boyfriends have gotten wrong in the past.
This isn't just my opinion thrown together - it's real feedback from real conversations.
The Golden Rules of Gift Giving
For Her: Size and Sensibility
Always get the smallest size. According to multiple women I spoke with, this is a universal rule. You can always exchange up, but going smaller initially shows thoughtfulness. And speaking of exchanges - always, always get a gift receipt.
Experiences Often Win Over Things
Instead of defaulting to physical gifts, consider:
Concert tickets for her favorite artist
Dinner at that restaurant you've both wanted to try
A couples massage
Broadway show tickets
Six Flags day trip if you're both into roller coasters
The key is listening to what she's mentioned wanting to do, not just what she wants to own.
Write a Card
This lost art needs to come back. A thoughtful note adds so much value to any gift, no matter how simple. Stop by CVS, grab a card, and write something genuine. It's that simple.

Shopping Strategy for Black Friday & Cyber Monday
Right now is literally the best time to shop - everything is on sale. Don't be that person scrambling for gifts two days before Christmas. Use this month-long window wisely:
Make a list of everyone you need to buy for
Set a budget for each person based on your relationship
Shop early while the best deals are available
Keep gift receipts for everything
The Relationship Factor
Your gift-giving should match your relationship stage:
Just started dating: Something thoughtful but not expensive
Several months in: You can increase both thoughtfulness and budget
Long-term relationship: You should know each other's preferences by now
Final Thoughts
The best gifts show that you pay attention and care about the person's interests. Whether it's a $30 candle or a $150 piece of jewelry, what matters most is the thought behind it.
Don't overthink it, but do put in effort. Most people are just grateful that you took the time to think of them and spend your hard-earned money on something for them.
