5 Things Worth The Money
TRANSCRIPT
There is a trend going viral online right now on TikTok and on Instagram where people list the five things that they think are worth the money. Basically the five things that they think you should spend on, that you should splurge on, that will make your life better.
So I wanted to do my own spin on this trend and give you the things that I think are worth the money that I think will improve your life and you know tell you why I think these are all worth the money. And I've separated them into three separate categories across dating, across lifestyle, and across mindset, which is a lot of what I talk about on here on Guy Set. And I've limited myself to three to five per category because.
Honestly, I probably could go on and on in each category about all these different things that I think are worth the money. Like if I'm talking about dating, I'd be like, condoms are worth the money. Like, that is absolutely worth the money. But that's kind of self-explanatory. Like, I don't think you need me to tell you that you need to buy condoms or you should buy condoms if you're having sex. Like, and you probably are, so you should be buying condoms. You don't need me to tell you that. You probably already know that. So I'm not gonna list like the things that I think everybody already knows or the things that like are out there. Maybe I should, but buy condoms. Uh-uh.
PSA, you know, use condoms, use protection, kids. or not kids. All right, let me just basically I could go on and on about all these other things, but I wanted to keep the lists short and accessible so that if you are actually looking for things to improve your life, or you are looking for things that you could add into your life, you could spend your money on, here is where you can find them. So before I put my foot in my mouth a hundred more times, let's get into it.
I'm gonna start with the first category, dating, and give you five or so things that I think are worth the money, worth spending money on. The first one is the manscaped. And I talked about this in last week's episode. Somebody asked if they should manscape, which has kind of become like a term, or become like a colloquial ism, a colloquial term. Kind of like when people say like Kleenex for tissue, like people say manscaped for razor for your.
Josh Felgoise (02:38.232)
Pubes, thank you very much. and it's this company that is called Manscaped, and I'm not sponsored by them. I absolutely should be because of the amount amount I talk about them. But this has been something that I think has absolutely improved my life, which is funny because it's like a very small thing, but it's a big thing at the same time. It's a lot of your mindset around how you feel about yourself, your confidence going into dates, your mindset in general. Like
When you clean up or when you feel good about the way you look, it kind of affects everything in your life. It really does. And it affects it more than you would probably think too. And there really isn't anybody to tell you that, like, if you want to, you could do that, or unless you get into a relationship and someone's like, hey, like, can you shave? Like, can you? So this is something that like we all have to decide on on our own if you want to be doing that or if you don't want to be doing that. But would say that this has been something that I think is great and I would recommend it. And I it's it's not cheap.
But it is like a very good invention to not like cut your balls off when you're trying to shave. and I would highly recommend it. I think this is absolutely worth the money. This is something that like is expensive because you could just use a razor and you could just like slap some shaving cream down there and hope for the best. But that's what happens when you use a regular razor. And this invention has come along and is actually very beneficial and very helpful and
makes the process so much quicker, so much less messy, less bloody. I know. I know. and just kind of came along and changed the game in terms of manscaping. So I would say in the dating category, this is also just kind of like a a a regular category one, a lifestyle one. This could fit into a bunch of different ones, but I think this is worth the money.
The next one I wanna talk about or recommend is a good cologne. I think that when you purchase a good cologne, you look into it and you're like, holy shit, like these are really expensive, but they last so long. Like I had a cologne in college, I think it was called YSL, which is the brand of it. I forget which one exactly it is. It lasted me my entire college experience. Like literally from freshman year to senior year. And and I still have it. I ended up getting rid of it because I was like, I just need a new scent.
Josh Felgoise (04:48.554)
and I I'm kinda tired of it and reminded me of like alcohol and date parties and like just it reminded me of a lot and it was time for something new and a change. But I I still had a lot in that bottle. Like one spritz on your wrist that you rub together and a spritz on your neck or your body or your balls or wherever you not actually, but like wherever you want to spray it, like three or four spritzes every couple nights that you're using it lasts so long. Like this is one of those things that is absolutely worth the money because it lasts you so long.
So spending the money splurging, if you will, on a good cologne is absolutely worth it. It will last you so long. Spraying it on yourself before you go on a date will make you feel better about yourself. The girl will also be like, like he smells nice. Like that's always a good thing. Going out, going to a bar, going on a date, going out with your friends, your like whatever it is, like a a spritz of cologne is always a nice thing. Like smelling good is always a good thing.
Obviously, again, here I could be like deodorant, but like you know that. You know what to buy deodorant. That's why I think like spending money on a good cologne is something that I would recommend. I have the polo Ralph Lauren Lauren, Ralph Lauren one. it's like the blue one. I believe it was the collab with I don't even know. It's just it's the blue one, it's very easy to find. I recommend that one. I really like it, but you should go to like a store and go test them out because every single cologne.
smells differently on each person. Like you could smell it in the bottle and be that smells great. And then spray it on your wrist and it will smell completely different on you than it will your friend or your whoever. so you definitely should test it out. I also recommend getting like a cologne tester kit. I've had a couple friends do this. I've also done myself and they give you like little samples basically and you can spray them on yourself, test them out every kind every so often when you go out. And I think that's a really good way to determine which one you like best.
and I think that's worth the money too. Like I think it's probably $45 to like maybe $85. and you get a bunch of different colognes and you can experiment that way. Also going into like a department store and going and like experimenting with the different ones. I think that this is worth your while. It's worth an investment, it's worth splurging on. get a good cologne. I think that is it's gonna improve your life in terms of dating, in terms of confidence, in terms of your mindset, in terms of how you how you feel about yourself. smelling good actually.
Josh Felgoise (07:09.314)
has all of those benefits. Kind of the overarching theme of this episode, which I haven't even gotten really into yet, is that like a lot of these things improve your life because it improves they they improve the way you think about yourself. And they make you feel better about yourself. Even if they don't like i intentionally or like immediately have that effect, like they will, and I really do believe that. So go the next one I have, or the next kind of two, this is like a a double one, a double situation.
is a good pair of jeans. I think everybody should have a good pair of jeans. I really like the brand Rag and Bone. They are expensive, but there are so many other brands of jeans that you can get. But if you have one or two good pairs of jeans, that's really all you need. Like they are an investment in that way. Like you can wear them so many times before you wash them. You ca unless you get like really sweaty and your balls are you know what I mean? A lot of balls. But
You know what I mean. Like you can wear your jeans a lot of different times before you wash them. If you have a nice, like, dark blue pair, maybe like a gray or a black or like a light wash blue. maybe you have three, but like I I think you could have one or two really great pairs of jeans. And that will really set you up for like success, because you could wear a darker pair of jeans on a date. You could wear them out, you could wear them where it it's like it really becomes like a staple in your wardrobe.
I don't really know that much about style, but I have had a few like style or fashion experts on this podcast, and they've also recommended this too, to have like a staple pair of pants that you can go rely on and turn to, and they're just like an easy thing to throw on whenever you're looking for an outfit or you don't know what to wear. Following up on that, a good pair of shoes, like a a nicer pair of maybe they're like a white sneaker or something, that you can wear on a date or going out or out to dinner.
Just like a reliable pair that goes with everything. So you don't have to overthink it. So you don't have to overthink the outfit or like what shoes should I wear? What should I do with that, what do with this? What should I do with that? and I'm gonna build some sort of like guide on guyset.com, which is the website I I do as like a kind of a parallel to this. and give you recommendations for jeans and for shoes that you can find on there. And I'll I'll link them in the show notes here as well.
Josh Felgoise (09:22.828)
so you can find that and go right to there if you're looking or you don't know like where to start in terms of all of this, because it is hard and there is no where to be like Guy said actually is the place to find where to start with all of this. And that's what I'm building and continuing to build on there. but I think that these two things will make your life a lot easier in terms of like what to wear, what should I wear, how do I look the best, how do I dress well.
having these two things are worth the money, and I think it's worth spending a little bit more money on having nicer of these two things. Like you can be even be a nicer pair of like, I don't know. I'll I'll put them all on the website. okay, the next one is after shave. This is this falls into the category of like the condoms and deodorant one, but I think this one is one that we aren't really told about that much. When I used to shave, I would get like the worst razor burn on my neck.
And it wasn't until I started like using after shave after I shaved, after shave after shave, that the bumps would subside. And it like in it made me feel so much better because I didn't have these like horrible red bumps on my neck and they healed quicker. So like overall, it was just a a great thing that I started using. I used the Nivea one. I I don't know why, it's just the one I first started using, and I've continued to because it doesn't break me out, it it applies nicely, and it does exactly what I want it to do.
I think this is a good investment. It's probably not that it's not that expensive at all. I know that's not probably it is not expensive. but it is something that I think is worth the money every single time. And you might think that you don't need an aftershave, but if you get those bumps or you like nick yourself or whatever, this aftershave is is great and I I would recommend it. An honorable mention here, because I'm trying not to do or I try not to do any like subscriptions, but I have two honorable mentions in this section and one more section.
And that is for Hinge Premium. I the reason I recommend Hinge Premium, so many different things. I'm not sponsored by them, obviously. You know that. But I I should be. Again, there's this is like a this is an episode where like these people should be finding me. but I I think that hinge premium does something to your mindset in terms of dating that you start taking it more seriously. First of all, like the dating apps can be really rough.
Josh Felgoise (11:41.272)
But when you start paying for them, like there's something within the algorithms, I don't know this to be true, like it maybe they're gonna spot to me after all this talk like trash talk about them. But there's something that's in the algorithms that like immediately gives you a better algorithm when you start paying for it. And that's like I feel like that's probably proven. When I was dating maybe a couple years ago and I I ended up getting hinge premium, a friend said to me, like, you spend like t $10 per drink when you go out, like, why don't you spend twenty dollars on hinge premium? Like you're going on all these dates.
You're going, you're you're trying to like meet people, you're trying to like actually make a connection. Like, why don't you take it more seriously on the dating apps where like you're spending a lot of your time anyway? And I was like, huh. Like that's kind of like the girl math way of thinking about it. And I was like, that's actually really true. Like I quickly spend $20 on two beers at a bar or $40 on four beers at a bar, and I don't even think twice about it. But when it comes to a subscription or when it comes to like a premium subscription of an app that's already free, I'm like,
Uh-uh, like I I I avoid that. And I think a lot a lot of people do it for the same reason that just like they don't carry the same mindset over to like a premium subscription that they do to a drink at a bar or a slop bowl for lunch at work, like whatever it is. I don't think we carry over that mindset to this, but I think we should, especially if you want to be taking dating seriously and you're in a place where you're like, actually, I really do want to meet someone, actually, I do really want to connect.
Because the mindset that comes with taking dating more seriously kind of affects everything. Something there just like kind of clicks when you start paying for something that you attach more meaning to it and you're like, huh, like okay, like I am taking this seriously, and I am gonna consider this person much more than I would have before, or I am gonna take this date much more seriously, or I am gonna put a lot more thought into what I'm saying here, or try and like make this date as best as possible and and
wake up a little bit and give it more of a go. Like I think there is all of that that comes with having a hinge premium or whatever app of your choice premium that you like. that's the one side of it. And also like the app just gets better because you can like match with a lot more people. It's kind of unlimited or whatever. And you get like hotter, better matches. Like that is just a thing that happens. again, I don't think that's like proven, but like I've proven it myself. I've done the fields field research myself to tell you that that is true.
Josh Felgoise (14:06.028)
So that's something as well. But I I really think the mindset that comes around taking something more seriously, or paying for something like that that you attribute to it is important and will go a long way for you if you want to start taking taking dating more seriously. So paying for a a premium dating app subscription, I think is much worth is is really worth your while. And you'll put a lot more thought and more care and be a lot more attentive to
dating into the dates and the people you're actually talking to instead of just being like, whatever, like I have three more free matches and I can send a Rose every once in a while and like fuck it, then I can come back tomorrow. When you actually start paying for it and you start being more serious, you become like less careless about it. And I think that's a good thing if you're taking dating more seriously or if you want to be taking dating more seriously. The next category I want to talk to you about is lifestyle.
And these are things that I think are worth your money to splurge on, to spend on, to spend a little bit more on than you would have. The first one is TSA PreCheck. This is like a no-brainer to me. I think it is like $300 for five years. I actually pulled that figure out of my ass. I did this a while ago and I totally forgot what costs. I could actually really quickly solve f solve it and then just like not be making shit up. How much does TSA Precheck?
It's a it's in times like these when I'm happy I can type fast. I'm sorry. It's eighty-five dollars for a five-year membership. And there are people who still think it's too expensive. Like, come on, it is so worth your money to be able to skip the lines and travel, to be able to like it's just it is such an easy decision for me at least. and I think it will make your life easier if you want to travel. If you do travel, it saves you so much time. Like, time is the only resource that we can't get any of back.
And that should be enough of a reason for you to get TSA pre-check. The next one is a good pan, like a k kick frying pan, like a kitchen pan. that is really worth your money, I think. Especially after college, when you probably wanna start taking cooking a little bit more seriously, like not seriously, like dating, but like in terms of like making better meals.
Josh Felgoise (16:13.366)
getting more protein, being more serious about what you're eating or what you wanna be consuming or putting into your body, being more conscious of all of that. Having a good pan that is not gonna like get black and burn every single time you cook something into it is I think a great thing that I have bought and has drastically improved my life because
It makes the cleanup easier. It makes the setup easier. It makes my mindset around wanting to cook something a lot better because I'm like, actually, I this cleanup and everything that comes with it is not going be like a horrible, treacherous journey that I have to put myself through. Like this will clean quickly. I I know what to do and it's a great pan and it cooks easily and well and whatever. I think this is one of those things that is worth the money. So if you cook or if you want to get better at cooking, you want to learn how to cook, get a bet a better pan, get a good pan and invest in that. The next one.
Is buying good sheets and towels. I'm putting them into the same category. but I think sheets are important. I think this is also like an after-college one, a living real life one. Having good sheets like really makes your life better. Like it just does. Have getting into a soft bed, getting into nice sheets, clean sheets, especially if you're hooking up people and it's like you have nice sheets, like oof, like that's points in your book. Come on. but
For yourself too, like having nice sheets to get into, soft, like silky whatever, like that is a lifestyle improvement. And I think it's worth your money. Same with good towels that aren't like fraying at the seams and like tearing apart. I think those are two places that I think are worth spending money on. The next one or the next two are more of like experiential things. I have never regretted spending money on a concert. I've never been like, I shouldn't have gone to that.
After going to a concert, I always feel like it is worth the money. Like every single time it in it like reinvigorates my spirit and my soul. And I love live music and I love live experiences. And I think I've never regretted spending money on a live experience like that. Whether it's a concert, whether it's a show, a Broadway show, any of that. Like I think those are always worth the money, especially because you remember it with the people you went with, or you remember it because of that song you discovered or that thing you saw or
Josh Felgoise (18:30.038)
what you thought about after and how it changed your mindset after and how it kind of put all of these things together for you. Like that is what live experiences can do. They they are like sometimes they're like therapy. They are are just like these really emotional, cathartic therapeutic things. And I've never, ever, ever regretted spending money on a concert or a live experience or a trip for that matter. I think that fits into this category too. And I don't think I ever will.
Here, people are always like money comes back, and like i i it doesn't, but like it does at the same time. You know what mean? Like, because I think it is so worth spending money on a concert or a live experience. again, I'm not telling you to spend like two thousand dollars on a stub hub ticket or like a resale ticket to a concert because like I'm not yeah, I'm not endorsing that, but like I am endorsing spending money wisely.
On experiences that you really want to go to that you're excited about, that you get to look forward to. Like also, the great part about buying tickets to something is like you spend all that time looking forward to it. And you get to build that experience up for yourself. And with the other person, you get to look forward like getting getting to look forward to something is so important. And having something to look forward to is so important. Like planning something, whether it's with a girlfriend, whether it's with a friend, whether it's with a sibling or a parent, whatever it is. Like,
Getting to plan something and then getting to look forward to that for so long is part of the experience. That part of it is worth the money, the anticipation, the excitement, like looking forward to things is so important. Having things to look forward to is so important. And I couldn't recommend it more. I think that makes honestly the thing worth spending money on. I also think in this category, dinners with your friends, with your girlfriend, with your significant other, with whoever, like going out to dinner.
And like eating, spending time talking, catching up, trying new foods, trying new things, getting drinks. Like I think those are worth the money too. of course I've regretted spending money on like 17 drinks at a bar, but I've never really regretted spending time and money at a dinner with a friend and catching up and the experience that you have with other other people, like dining and eating out and all of that. Pause. but I just think that that is absolutely worth the money.
Josh Felgoise (20:40.026)
especially again, because you get to look forward to something. You have something on your calendar, you're excited, you're anticipating, and you get to talk and and catch up and and like reminisce and whatever you want to do. I just think experiences, dinners, concerts, trips, shows, like always worth the money. The next one, the next section is mindset. These are things that I think are worth the money in terms of your mindset. And again, these kind of also like
go into every other category too, but I just wanted to separate them into categories to make this episode like a little bit more palatable or easier to understand. and then instead of just like listing everything out, because that would have been like a lot. Whatever. Anyway, the next one, the next thing I recommend that I think is worth spending money on, and this goes into every category, and I think this is maybe my number one. I should probably should have started with instead of Manscaped, is a gym membership. I think a gym membership is so worth the money.
Again, this is where like spending money on something makes you take it more seriously. Like if you're spending X amount of money per month on something, like you're so much more likely to go. You're so much more likely to take it seriously and be conscious about your effort there and the time you spend there and the work you do there and like the workout you get in. I think getting or spending money on a good gym round gym membership is so worth it. Like it
helps, it aids, it kind of supports every aspect of your life. Your mindset, your physique, your energy level, your spirit, your everything. Like s working out, lifting, strength training, lifting weights, putting on muscle, like all of this has such an incredible an incredibly important effect on your mindset, on your body, on your sleep, on your energy, on
your personality on all of these things that I think the gym membership is such a great way to spend your money. And especially if you're going once a day or at least five times a week, like this is worth the money. If you can spending money on a gym membership that has nice showers or nice amenities as well is always a great thing too. And that that is like the extra kind of step up here. But
Josh Felgoise (22:58.334)
Regardless, spending money on a gym membership is worth the money. And I think it's such an important thing to spend money on too. Especially if you're in like a city or a place that it's not as accessible to be able to work work out every day. If you live in an apartment like most people, where there's not unless there's like a gym in your apartment, then and like they usually come with some sort of cost too. Like that is worth the money too. But most of us are in our our apartments all day. We're either going to the office or working from home.
And we don't get outside that much. We don't get as many steps as we'd always want to. So being able to go somewhere and get that workout in, get that lift in, strength train, like all of that, and having that place to go is so worth it. I think that's also an important part of it. Like having a place to go is is good. And it's good for us. And it's good to have a routine. And it's good to get up in the morning and go somewhere. And that kind of also has an effect on everything as well. Like
Having something to do, a place to go, a thing to do, something to look forward to, something that you have to get up for, something that you need to do, that you desire to do, that you kind of train yourself to want to do every morning. Like I have gotten to a place I was never a morning person before, like up until after college. I was never a morning person, even a few months out of college.
And then I realized that I could not really get my workout in unless I did it in the morning. Like I I could not do it because after work, I would get back from work and or the workday would be over and I'd be pretty tired and I'd be kind of like exhausted. And I'd wanna just sit down on the couch or I'd wanna catch up with a friend or a family member. I'd wanna cook dinner. I'd wanna go out. I'd wanna go on a date. I'd wanna do all these different things, do laundry, and I had like no time to do anything. And if I went to the gym, it would then like
move the clock from 5 30 to 7 30 and then I'd want to cook dinner and then I'd be like, wait, shit, it's already nine. Now I have to go like I and I didn't do anything I wanted to do. So going to the gym in the morning became a very important part of my daily routine. And I've kept it up for now four years or so. And it it has changed my life, honestly, because I have something to get up for. I have something to
Josh Felgoise (25:02.796)
go to. I have something that I'm excited to get up for and get out of bed for. And it it affects every single aspect of my life. And I couldn't recommend it more. The next one is a hatch. this is something that I got recently. I also would say I I want to say Amazon Alexa, but she she'll hear me. So I don't want to say it too loudly and then she'll just like she won't stop talking to me. But those two things I think are in the same category and are really good. I would say the hatch more
it's this alarm clock that like makes it feel like you're waking up to sunlight. So if you're somewhere that you don't have a ton of light or you're you struggle to get up in the morning, or you like to close your curtains because you don't like the light from outside or whatever it is, having this hatch that wakes you up, like it slowly wakes you up. You can set it to whatever you want. It can also like kind of slowly put you to bed at night too. with like that's light and it's sounds and it's like meditative and all these different things that I don't really use it for, but like
Having that thing wake me up in the morning to like the light and to the sound is a really amazing way to wake up in the morning. It is expensive and there is a subscription. so this is this would be one of the things that like you more so splurge on than need. but I think it's worth the money and I've really liked my time with it so far. I haven't had it for so long, maybe like six months or so. But I it has made my mornings easier. It's made waking up better. and I I like it. I would recommend it to you.
and then the last thing, this is this would go into the condoms category of things that like yeah duh. but I think a good notebook and a good pen are really good things to have. And this might sound silly, but I really think that like journaling or not even I I I don't journal as much as I used to. I used to talk about it a lot and I used to do it every single day, and I've I've kind of fallen out from it.
But I still every single day write the three things that I'm grateful for and then like the seven things I want to do. It's called the Ivy Lee method. I've done it for so long now. and basically you order it in it's you're supposed to order it in like the from top to bottom of the thing you wanna do least, the thing you would like wanna do most, because you have to knock out the thing you want to do least. And then like whatever you don't do, it goes to the top of the next day. So let's say you didn't do the bottom three, that becomes the top three of the next day. And I do that every single day.
Josh Felgoise (27:17.37)
and I try to also write like my intention for the day. it takes me like less than five minutes to do this. And having a notebook that I really like, I have like a blue leather notebook, and then I have this pen, also like an Amazon cheap pen. I'll I'll put all this on guyset.com as well. but having those two things I think is nice. And and I I like writing with that pen and I like writing in that notebook. and having something that you like and you like writing with or you like opening every single day.
I think is also a good investment. That's like another, that's a really cheap one. And I think it will be worth your while too. Whether you want to start journaling, whether you want to start the method that I just recommended or I'm offering up to you, whether you want to do that or not, whether you just want to have a nice notebook and a pen, like I think those are are those are good things to have. those are the things that I think are worth the money. I could find so many other things throughout my apartment that I'm looking at right now that I think would be worth your money or that you could spend money on.
But this is the list that I put together that I think will improve your life starting today, if you decided to get any of these or tomorrow. and I think will, you know, help your mindset, will make you feel better about yourself, will make you feel more confident, will make you feel more energized, will make you feel more excited. and they have a lot greater of an impact on your life than you might think they would.
So that is the episode. Thank you so much for listening to Guy Set, a guy's guide to what should be talked about. If you have any thing that you think is worth the money that you would recommend, please let me know. Please either write in the comments or send it into the ask me anything on guyset.com.
