How Do You Stand Out When Everyone Is Doing The Same Thing?

Why it’s not about doing more, it’s about being clearer

Everyone is creating now.

Everyone is posting.
Everyone has a platform.
Everyone is trying to grow something.

So the question isn’t should you start.

It’s: How do you actually stand out?

This came up in my conversation on Episode 35 of Guyset with former Barstool Sports CEO Erika Ayers Badan, and her perspective is blunt:

“Being good isn’t enough anymore.”

That’s the starting point.

Because if being good was enough, more people would break through.

They don’t.

Most Creators Are Unclear

Most creators don’t struggle because they aren’t talented.

They struggle because they’re unclear.

They post a little of everything.
They talk to everyone.
They never fully commit to a lane.

And that makes it impossible to stand out.

Because when someone lands on your page, they’re subconsciously asking:

Is this for me?

If the answer isn’t obvious, they leave.

Clarity beats creativity here.

What you talk about.
Who it’s for.
Why it matters.

The creators who grow aren’t always the most creative.

They’re the most clear.

You Have to Choose Something

Clarity requires a decision most people avoid.

You have to choose:

A perspective
A category
A type of moment you want to own

That’s what gives people a reason to come back.

If you don’t choose, you blend in.

That’s true in content the same way it’s true anywhere else. It’s the same idea behind What Separates Successful People From Everyone Else? because it comes down to making decisions most people hesitate on.

More Content Won’t Fix a Lack of Direction

There’s a misconception that standing out comes from doing more.

Posting more.
Trying more formats.
Being on more platforms.

But volume without direction just creates more noise.

You don’t need to be everywhere.

You need to be recognizable.

And that comes from repetition.

Saying the same types of things.
Explaining ideas in your way.
Showing up consistently.

“That’s where most people fall off.”

Your Point of View Is the Differentiator

The part that actually makes someone stand out isn’t the content itself.

It’s the perspective behind it.

Two people can talk about the same topic.

One gets ignored.

One builds something.

The difference is how they see it.

How they frame it.
What they notice that other people don’t.

That’s what creates a point of view.

And that’s what people follow.

Not just information.

Identity.

Insights from Harvard Business Review show that in crowded markets, differentiation comes from positioning and identity more than output.

Safe Content Doesn’t Stand Out

There’s a level of honesty required that most people avoid.

Safe content gets ignored.

The content that works says something clearly.

It makes someone think:

That’s exactly what I’ve been thinking.

Research from Psychology Today shows that people are more likely to engage with content that reflects their internal experiences.

Consistency Is Still the Advantage

And then there’s the part no one wants to hear.

It takes longer than you think.

Longer than feels reasonable.

Longer than feels fair.

“Most people just don’t stay consistent long enough.”

That’s the difference.

Not a secret strategy.

Not a hidden tactic.

Just staying in it when most people stop.

Research from the American Psychological Association shows that consistent effort over time is one of the strongest predictors of long-term success.

You’re Building Something Bigger Than Content

If you look at creators who stand out, they’re not doing something magical.

They’re doing a few things consistently:

They’re clear about what they’re building.
They have a point of view.
They stay consistent longer than expected.

And they make people feel seen.

That last part matters most.

Because when someone feels understood, they stay.

They come back.

They share it.

If you’re trying to build something as a creator, this also connects to a bigger picture.

A lot of people feel stuck in their careers because they’re not building anything of their own.

That’s exactly what Why Do I Feel Stuck in My Career in My 20s? starts to get at.

And Here’s The Thing

Standing out as a creator today isn’t about being louder.

It’s about being clearer.

Clear in what you say.
Clear in who it’s for.
Clear in how you think.

Because when everything is crowded, clarity is what cuts through.
