#100 - And We're Just Getting Started

Apr 29, 2025

MORE ON THIS EPISODE

When I started Guyset almost 2 years ago, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. What I did know was how much I wanted to see something like this in the world, a place for guys to hear real advice and different perspectives on the things they're thinking about, wondering about, anxious about, or feel weird about for not knowing and since I couldn't find that, I created it. Because I was that guy, and I am that guy. I created a place where I could hear advice that applies to me and the guys my age in every aspect of my life from dating and relationships to career, success, confidence, insecurity, style, health, wellness, fitness, appearance, and so much more. What I didn’t know was how much this would change me, how much I’d learn, and how much I'd grow.

Thank you so much for being here and for sticking with me through 100 episodes... WHAT! 100 episodes?!?!

I’m really grateful to do this, that you're here with me, and that I took a chance on myself. And the best part is, we’re just getting started.

100 Episodes Later: What I Learned Building a Podcast from Scratch in My 20s

At 24 years old, Josh Felgoise just hit a milestone that only 5.36% of podcasters ever reach: 100 episodes. In this raw, honest reflection on creating Guyset—a podcast for guys in their 20s—he shares the real story behind building something from nothing, the self-doubt that nearly stopped him, and why believing in yourself is both simple and the hardest thing you'll ever do.

The Secret: "I Am the Audience"

After watching Martha Stewart's documentary on Netflix, something clicked for Josh. As Martha put it, "The secret was I was the audience."

"That is exactly how I feel about this," Josh explains. "As much as I'm talking to you and looking for answers to questions that you're asking, I'm also talking to me too."

This realization transformed everything. Josh wasn't just creating content for other guys in their 20s—he was creating it for himself too, addressing the questions, anxieties, and uncertainties he faced every day.

The Jump: When You Believe in Yourself, Things Fall into Place

Starting Guyset felt like jumping with nothing below him. Josh had no podcast experience, no clear path, no guarantee of success. But something magical happened when he took that leap.

"When I started believing in myself and seeing the ideas I had in my head go onto paper and into the world through audio and this podcast, it absolutely felt like a jump... But I jumped. And when I did, things just started to make sense when I took a chance on myself."

The Real Work: 4 AM Editing Sessions for a Tiny Audience

Success stories often gloss over the grinding middle part. Josh doesn't. He talks honestly about staying up until 4 AM editing episodes for a tiny listenership, working week after week when hardly anyone was listening.

"Those are the moments where I feel like I've grown the most and I learned the most. Chasing a dream or something you believe in isn't supposed to be easy."

Why the Struggle Matters

According to Josh, if success came easy, "where would the growth be in that? Where would the learning be in that? You would be at the exact same place you are with the same knowledge and the same understanding... and that's not a place I ever intend on staying."

Every Episode Is a Brick

Josh sees each episode as laying another brick in a foundation. Episode 100 isn't more important than episode 4 or 24 or 69 (he jokes about accidentally saying that number).

"This milestone, this 100th episode is nothing without every single week of doing this and every single week of believing in myself and crowding out the noise and the judgment."

The 100th episode is just another brick—maybe a different color, but still part of the same structure he's building, one episode at a time.

The Process vs. The Milestone

While everyone asks about celebrating the 100th episode milestone, Josh finds more meaning in the weekly process:

"I've always found the journey to get there, the building, the laying the bricks, and then seeing what makes the most sense, the most exciting part of all of this, so much more than the actual milestone."

What We Don't Talk About Enough

Josh wishes people were more transparent about the real work behind success:

  • The hours of studying that went into passing the test

  • The plans canceled to put in the work

  • The applications submitted and interviews attended before getting the dream job

  • The rejection from jobs, relationships, and opportunities

  • The weeks of self-doubt and disbelief

"I want to hear about how people are still in that, still trying to figure it out and mend themselves and put themselves back together every single day when they wake up."

The Vulnerability Challenge

Being vulnerable on a podcast is harder than it looks. Josh admits there are episodes he looks back on and cringes, moments where he said something he shouldn't have, times when his authenticity hurt relationships.

"There's been a lot of those moments throughout two years of doing this that I've lost my way... That's okay. That's part of the process."

The Moment That Made It All Worth It

The most meaningful feedback Josh received came from a young guy who approached him at an event:

"You don't know me, but I've listened to almost every single one of your episodes. I live in Nashville... I relate to everything you're going through. I've just never heard another guy say it."

The guy continued: "Hearing you talk about the same struggles that I struggle with and hearing you talk about the same anxieties that I face and the same uncertainties that I feel... makes me feel so much less alone in all of those feelings."

This interaction reminds Josh why he does this every week—to show guys they're not alone in their struggles.

What You Need to Love Your Work

Josh quotes a musician who said: "You have to do this because you love it. And it doesn't matter if you're broke, you're still gonna do it... You have to love this thing, man. You have to breathe it. It's your morning coffee. It's your food."

This mindset applies to anything you're passionate about—you have to love it enough to do it even when there's no guaranteed path to success.

The Ideas You Push Down

Everyone has those sparks of ideas that come at random moments:

  • Walking outside when an idea hits, but you push it down thinking "I could never do that"

  • Lying in bed thinking about what could be if you just tried

  • At work when an idea comes back and you wonder what life could look like

"Everybody has those sparks, those moments where they want to try something new, they want to do something, but they think they're gonna be judged for it... So they avoid it and they go toward a place of comfort."

The Uncomfortable Truth About Growth

Josh emphasizes that growth happens in discomfort: "Nobody likes to be uncomfortable, but those are the moments where you grow and you learn the most about yourself."

Success Isn't Just Numbers

Guyset isn't a top 100 podcast by industry standards, but Josh feels incredibly successful:

"I feel so successful when I do it. When I look back at the fact that I decided to try and take a chance on myself, believe in myself and jump, I feel so successful in that."

The Daily Excitement

What drives Josh isn't the pressure of having to create content—it's the excitement of getting to create:

"It's not 'how am I gonna make another episode' or 'what am I gonna talk about'... It's that I get to do this, that I've given myself the opportunity to do this, to try, try again and try more."

Key Takeaways for Anyone Building Something

1. Start For Yourself First

If you're the audience for what you're creating, you'll never run out of authentic content.

2. Embrace the Grinding Middle

The late-night work sessions with no audience are often when you grow the most.

3. Every Step Matters

Don't wait for the milestone to feel accomplished. Each day of work is valuable.

4. Share the Process

People want to hear about the real work behind success, not just the highlight reel.

5. Be Vulnerable

Your struggles are what connect you with others who feel the same way.

6. Love What You Do

You need to love it enough to do it even when there's no guarantee of success.

7. Trust Yourself

"You are the only one that can make your dreams come true. The only one that can bring your idea to life."

The Simple Truth

As Josh puts it: "It's not easy, but it is simple."

The path to creating something meaningful isn't complicated in concept—pick something you believe in, start, and keep going despite the doubt. But it requires facing uncomfortable truths about yourself, pushing through weeks of uncertainty, and believing in your vision when no one else can see it yet.

What's Next?

Josh's message is clear: "We're just getting started."

The 100th episode isn't an ending—it's proof that taking a chance on yourself works. And if a 24-year-old can build something meaningful by believing in himself and showing up consistently, maybe it's time to look at those ideas you've been pushing down.

What would happen if you just tried?

Inspired to start something of your own? Josh's journey proves that the biggest risk is often not taking any risk at all. Whether it's a podcast, business, creative project, or career change—the only way to make your dreams real is to begin.
